Pool Salt Calculator: How Much Salt to Add to Your Pool?
Enter your pool volume and current salt level to get the exact salt dose in pounds, kilograms, and bags.
How Much Salt Does Your Pool Need?
Most salt chlorine generators run best at 3,200 ppm (range 2,700–3,600 ppm). If your pool is fresh fill (0 ppm), you need the full dose. If it already has some salt, you only add the difference.
The formula
US gallons: lbs of salt = gallons × 8.34 × (target ppm − current ppm) ÷ 1,000,000
Liters: kg of salt = liters × (target ppm − current ppm) ÷ 1,000,000
Example: 10,000 gal from 0 → 3,200 ppm = 10,000 × 8.34 × 3,200 ÷ 1,000,000 = 267 lb(6.7 bags of 40 lb). In metric: 37,854 L × 3,200 ÷ 1,000,000 = 121 kg.
Bags: divide pounds by bag weight (40 lb, 50 lb, 20 kg, 25 kg). Round up to whole bags when buying — partial bags don't exist on the shelf.
If current salt is above target, the calculator shows the drain percentage instead. Salt does not evaporate; the only way to lower it is removing water.

How to Add Salt to Your Pool
- Balance first. pH 7.2–7.6, total alkalinity 80–120 ppm. High pH + high salt = scaling on the cell.
- Turn the salt generator OFF. Keep the pump running.
- Broadcast salt in the shallow end. Walk around the pool spreading evenly — don't pour it all in one spot.
- Brush to dissolve. Use a pool brush to push any piles toward the main drain. Salt dissolves in ~24 hours with the pump running.
- Do NOT pour into the skimmer. Concentrated salt can damage the cell plates.
- Wait 24 hours, then retest. Turn the generator back on only after salt is fully dissolved and reads within range.
Salt Water Pool Calculator: Sizing a Salt System
If you're shopping for a salt chlorine generator, size it by peak chlorine demand, not just pool volume. A 20,000 gal pool in Arizona with full sun and heavy use needs a larger cell than the same pool in Maine.
Quick rule: choose a cell rated for 1.5–2× your pool volume for comfortable headroom.
Example: 15,000 gal pool → get a cell rated for 25,000–30,000 gal.
Undersized cells run at 100% output constantly, shortening lifespan. Oversized cells let you dial down the % and still meet demand on the hottest days.
When Salt Is Too High
If your salt reads above 4,000 ppm (or above your generator's max), you have one option:partial drain and refill. No chemical, no enzyme, no "salt reducer" can lower salt.
Drain % = (current ppm − target ppm) ÷ current ppm × 100
Example: 4,200 ppm → target 3,200 ppm = (4,200 − 3,200) ÷ 4,200 = 24% drain. Remove ~1/3 of the water, refill, retest. Repeat if needed.
⚠ Never drain a vinyl or fiberglass pool completely without professional guidance — the liner can shift or the shell can pop.
Common Salt Level Problems
- Reading doesn't match test strips: Test strips are unreliable for salt. Use a drop-based kit (Taylor K-2006 / TF-100) or send a sample to a pool store.
- Cell reads low in cold water: Most cells under-read below 60°F (15°C). Warm a sample to room temp before testing.
- High TDS interferes: Total dissolved solids above 5,000 ppm can skew readings. Dilution is the only fix.
- Dirty cell plates: Scale buildup on the cell gives false low readings. Clean per manufacturer instructions.
- Salt keeps dropping: Check for leaks, excessive backwash, or rain dilution. Salt doesn't "wear out" or evaporate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many 40 lb bags of salt do I need for my pool?
For a 10,000 gallon pool starting from 0 ppm to reach 3,200 ppm, you need about 267 lb — that's 6.7 bags of 40 lb salt (buy 7 bags). Use the calculator above for your exact volume and current salt level.
How much salt should a 10,000 gallon pool have?
The ideal target for most salt chlorine generators is 3,200 ppm. From 0 ppm, a 10,000 gallon pool needs 267 lb of salt (about 6.7 bags of 40 lb). If your current salt is 2,000 ppm, you only need 100 lb (2.5 bags).
How many bags of salt for a 30,000 gallon pool?
At 3,200 ppm target from 0 ppm, a 30,000 gallon pool needs about 801 lb — that's 20 bags of 40 lb salt. Always add salt in stages and retest.
Can you put too much salt in a pool?
Yes. Above 4,500 ppm, salt cell lifespan shortens. Above 5,000 ppm, metal corrosion risk increases (ladders, lights, heaters). The only fix is partial drain and refill — no chemical lowers salt.
Does pool salt evaporate?
No. Salt does not evaporate. It only leaves the pool through splash-out, backwash, partial drain/refill, or rain dilution. This is why salt accumulates over time.
What type of salt should I use?
Use ≥99.8% pure sodium chloride (NaCl) — no anti-caking agents, no iodine, no water softener salt. Look for "pool salt" or "solar salt" labeled for pools.
My salt cell reading doesn't match my test — why?
Common causes: cell needs recalibration, water temperature below 60°F reads low, high TDS interferes, or the cell plates need cleaning. Recalibrate after adding salt.
Is a salt water pool chlorine-free?
No — this is the biggest misconception. A salt water pool IS a chlorine pool. The salt chlorine generator converts salt into chlorine on-site. You still have free chlorine in the water.
